Congratulations! Six Chief Science Communication Experts from CAST Elected as Academicians of CAS and CAE!

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) announced the results of the election of additional academicians for 2019 on Nov. 22. A total of 6 chief science communication experts from the China Association for Science and Technology were elected as the academicians. They included 3 admitted by the CAS, namely Researcher Wang Chi, the chief expert from the science communication experts team on space physics, Researcher Mao Ming, the chief expert from the popular science experts team on Chinese good design, Professor Luo Qingming, the chief expert from the science communication team on biomedicine & photonics, and Professor Ma Changsheng, the chief expert from the science communication experts team on cardiac electrophysiology; another 2 were admitted by the CAE, namely Professor Yan Xinping, the chief expert from the themed popular science activity experts team on mechanical engineering, and Professor Liu Zhonghua, the chief expert from the science communication experts team on deep tea processing of the China Tea Science Society.
Wang Chi
Researcher and director of the National Space Science Center, CAS, director of the State Key Laboratory of Space Weather concurrently, and chief science communication expert from the science communication experts team on space physics.
Mao Ming
Chief scientist of the China North Industries Group Corporation Limited (NORINCO Group), researcher of the No. 201 Institute of the Group, chief designer of the 99A Tank, and chief science communication expert from the science communication experts team on China good design.
Luo Qingming
Professor and president of Hainan University, director of Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO) of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and chief science communication expert from the science communication experts team on biomedicine and photonics.
Yan Xinping
Professor and doctoral supervisor of the Intelligent Transportation Systems Center and the School of Energy and Power Engineering, WUT, and chief science communication expert from the themed popular science activity experts team on mechanical engineering.
Liu Zhonghua
Professor and doctoral supervisor of Hunan Agricultural University, director of the National Research Center of Engineering Technology for Utilization Ingredients From Botanicals, and director of the National Office of Research on Processing of Tea Industry Technology Systems. He has concurrently served as the vice chairman of the China Tea Science Society, the China Tea Marketing Association, and the China International Tea Culture Institute, and chief expert from the science communication experts team on deep tea processing of the China Tea Science Society.
As a non-corporate, non-profit and non-independent team composed of science and technology workers on a voluntary basis, the scientific communication experts team is, under the unified deployment and guidance of the China Association for Science and Technology (hereinafter, CAST), established by various national societies, associations and research associations under CAST (hereinafter, national societies), with the basic task of implementing the Law of the People’s Republic of China on the Popularization of Science and Technology, strengthening the building of the popular science talents team, enhancing the State’s service capabilities of popular science, leading, advancing and guiding the comprehensive development of science and science in China, improving the scientific literacy of citizens, and serving the implementation of the innovation-driven development strategy. The Team follows the basic principle of“Advancing construction via use & co-construction and sharing with the support of disciplines and based on realities”, is promoted by the CAST and national societies, and launches public welfare science services by disciplines (industries) which are focused on national economic and social development and actual needs of people’s production and lives. At present, a total of 122 national societies have established 512 science communication experts teams and recruited a total of 510 chief science communication experts, including 52 academicians (including newly elected ones); the total number of experts in the library science communication reaches 6,547.
As the entity responsible for organizing the implementation of the science communication experts team, the China Science Writers Association provides a support platform for scientists in carrying out popular science activities and science creation actively, including training, salons and publicity, with the aim of mobilizing and attracting more scientists into popular science and science creation.
