News: Training Activity for 2018 Popular Science Writing - Young Stars Program for Popular Science and Science Fiction (Wuhan Station) Kicked Off

On the morning of June 11, the training activity for the 2018 Popular Science Writing - Young Stars Program for Popular Science and Science Fiction (Wuhan Station) & Hubei Popular Science Writing Competition for College Students kicked off in China University of Geosciences, Wuhan. The activity was held under the joint auspices of China Science Writers Association, Hubei Research Association for Science and Technology Work of Colleges and Universities and Wuhan Science and Technology Association Alliance of Universities and Colleges, and the attendees for the launching ceremony, which was presided over by Wang Linqing, Deputy Party Secretary of China University of Geosciences, Wuhan, included Yin Hongfu, Jin Zhenmin and Zhou Zhonghe, Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wang Yanxin, President of China University of Geosciences, Wuhan, leaders and science and technology workers from Chinese Science Writers Association, Hubei Association for Science and Technology, China Research Institute for Science Popularization, and young enthusiasts for popular science and science fiction from Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology and China University of Geosciences, Wuhan, the three sponsors of the Competition.

President Wang analyzed the current situations and tasks facing science popularization among college students, and briefed on the recent explorations of science popularization by China University of Geosciences, Wuhan. He pointed out that the Earth Science and Science Popularization Research and Creation Center was established in the University in 2017 with the main goal of fully taping the potentials of such popular science resources as disciplines, platforms and talents, encouraging scientific researchers to perform research and write works on popular science and inspiring both the enthusiasm and creativity of college students to love and devote to popular science, thereby scoring greater achievements in the development of China’s popular science cause.

Zhang Zhimin, Deputy Secretary-General of China Science Writers Association, introduced the purpose, content, year-round training plans of the Project 2018 Popular Science Writing - Young Stars Program for Popular Science and Science Fiction and the upcoming campaign on soliciting popular science and science fiction works. Moreover, Tong Shuhua from Wuhan University’s Association for Science and Technology briefed on the popular science writing training in Wuhan and the Hubei Popular Science Writing Competition for College Students, and called on students to participate in it actively.

After the short launching ceremony, the 1st training session of the 2018 Popular Science Writing - Young Stars Program for Popular Science and Science Fiction (Wuhan Station) started. Academician Zhou Zhonghe, Chairman of China Science Writers Association, was invited to deliver his report on Some of My Experiences on Science Popularization. Academician Zhou began his popular science writing since he was a graduate student, and has always been concerned with and supported popular science writing. During the lecture, he, by combining his years of experience in paleontological science writing, taught both the teachers and students the skills of writing different types of popular science works. When encouraging college students to take an active part in popular science and its writing, Academician Zhou argued that attempts at college could help young students validate their capabilities and potentials to write popular science works, and that they should dare to try, thus making correct judgments and choices on their future occupations and occupational development. Academician Zhou’s lecture was warmly welcomed by the young students, and they interacted actively with each other.

Wuhan Station is part of the 2017 Popular Science Writing - Young Stars Program for Popular Science and Science Fiction. In 2018, the connotation and scope of popular science training activities at the Wuhan Station have further expanded to include 1 preliminary training course on popular science and science fiction writing, 3 high-level training courses and 1 popular science writing competition for college students. Yin Hongfu, Jin Zhenmin, Zhou Zhonghe and Gong Jianya will serve as scientific consultants for this competition.
